Penalty Shootout Nightmare! Germany Knocked Out as Paraguay Pulls Off Shock Upset

A dramatic penalty shootout brought Germany’s World Cup campaign to an end. Facing an unfancied Paraguay side, the four-time champions were stunned, missing three spot-kicks and eventually losing 3-4 on penalties, crashing out in the Round of 32. Havertz, Nick Woltemade, and Jonathan Tah all failed to convert, proving decisive in Germany’s elimination.

The match finished 1-1 after regular time. Paraguay forward Enciso opened the scoring with a powerful header to give his side the lead. Although Germany dominated possession for long stretches, they only found an equalizer in the second half, when Havertz also headed home a superb finish to send the match into extra time.

In extra time, Germany had chances to seal the victory. Center-back Tah appeared to have scored from a corner with a header, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened and ruled the goal out due to a foul by teammate Anton on the goalkeeper during an aerial challenge. The decision dealt a significant blow to Germany’s momentum. Paraguay goalkeeper Gill then produced a heroic performance, denying dangerous efforts from both Havertz and Anton.

The penalty shootout was full of twists and turns. Germany’s first two takers, Havertz and Woltemade, both missed, putting their team in a desperate situation. However, Paraguay’s Sanabria also failed to score, and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer kept hopes alive by saving Balbuena’s attempt. In the fifth round, Tah fired over the bar, and Paraguay’s Canale calmly converted to seal the victory.

With this hard-fought win, the world No. 41-ranked Paraguay advance to the Round of 16. They will face the winner of France vs Sweden, with the match scheduled for July 4 in Philadelphia.
